  8. mires will appear oval since 
  9. the radii in the two meridians 
  10. are quite different.  The 
  11. steeper meridian gives a 
  12. smaller mire image (narrow 
  13. portion of the oval) and the 
  14. flatter meridian gives a 
  15. larger mire image (long axis 
  16. of the oval).
